Pakistan has many thousands of donkeys working in very difficult conditions.
The issues that make life so hard for these animals include temperatures in excess of 45C, poor diet, inadequate harness and cart design, traditional medicines that can cause more harm than good, poor farrier skills, uneven road surfaces and age-old beliefs like ‘Animals don’t need shade when resting’ and ‘Animals should not drink water while working’. It all adds up to a miserable life of daily suffering, which only comes to an end when the donkey is too old or too ill to continue working.- The animal’s eye is affected due to beating by a stick, the eye is tearing profusely regularly.
- The donkey is injured due to erosion of the side leg’s enlarged hoof. The wound is bandaged with common cloth without any medication.
- The animal is paralysed in the hind legs due to electric shocks.
- This donkey is infested with worms which is why it is so emaciated and not able to work properly.

JBF has partnered with the well respected and long established social enterprise called Seedout to deliver a project that breaks this cycle once and for all.
Together, we aim to give the owners of donkeys the chance to take a 3 year 0% interest loan to buy a motorised cargo carrier. The loan is then paid back to the donors account at Seedout, where it is redistributed to more donkey owners wishing to make the change to motor transport. You can see what we are doing together at www.seedout.org.
